Vardges Surenyants is one of the most prominent Armenian artists of the late XIX early XX centuries. He was born in the city of Akhaltsikhe in Georgia, studied in Moscow then in Munich. Surenyants is considered the founder of historical genre in Armenian visual arts. Among his most famous art works are “Salome” (1907), “The Return of Queen Zabel” (1909), “Ara the Beautiful and Shamiram”, etc. Currently, art works of Surenyants are presented in the National Gallery of Armenia.
